Librascope Memories’ Blog

For improved security, and in accordance with industry trends, this website was updated to https by its host RageSW for an extra cost of $29.95 per year.

Also, the countdown counter on the Welcome page was updated to announce the 2018 Librascope Employee’s Reunion on October 13th.
See Librascope Memories - News Blog, Post #136 for the details about this important change.
See Librascope Memories - News Blog, Post #130 for a complete description of the updates made.
Three L100 and L200 Series Disc Memory Advertisements were added to the Photos section, including an endorsement from Fairchild - one of Librascope’s memory customers. The 1960‘s and early 1970‘s ads appeared in the trade magazine Datamation.
Added 2014 Table and Candid Photo Albums with approximate[y 100 photos, all with the names of the attendees in each photo. Added two Sea Stories contributed by Ray Hand to the History page. Also added a 1960’s Christmas party photo to the People Album on the Photos page, and updated the FAQ’s page.
Added L-1500 Series, and Vintage Integrator Photos, a QA & Resource Management Reunion - 2000 photo, and an L-1530 Brochure.
This was a major update.

Thirty photos from the 1999 Reunion and thirty-three photos from the 2000 Reunion were added. 1999 was the year of the first reunion. In addition, All reunion albums were updated to include the names of the Libravets appearing in each photo. This avoids having to refer to a separate chart to identify people in the photos.

In addition, three new Librascope videos (#6, 7, and 8) were added. Each of these was published on YouTube to minimize the burden on the viewer’s computer. These were described in the LM - News Blog Post #118.
35 photos from the 2002 Librascope Reunion held at the Castaway’s in Burbank have been published in the Photos Section of this website. The album includes 23 table and 12 candid photos.
The 2014 Reunion for all Libravets and their guests is now scheduled for Saturday November 1, 2014 at the Angeles National Golf Club Clubhouse in Sunland, California. An invitation with all the details will be published later in the year.
Meanwhile, please mark your calendars.
22 “Table” photos taken at the 2006 Librascope Reunion were added to the Photos Album page on the website. Each photo’s caption includes the name of each attendee at the table.
18 Table Photos from the 2008 Librascope Reunion have been published in the Photos Album section. The size of each photo is about 50% larger than album photos displayed in the past. This change provides improved readability, and sufficient caption space to identify everyone by name without having to refer to a separate index table

In addition, the size of over 400 photos in 13 of the other photo albums have also been increased to improve readability. Albums added in the future will also be larger.
Two Photo Albums were added to the Photos page. The “2012 Reunion - Tables” album contains 15 photos including a listing of all the attendees at each table. The second “2012 Reunion - Candids” album includes 60 photos that were taken by a three of the attendees.

In addition, a list of 35 Libravets that passed away between the last two reunions was added to Section IV. of the History page. This list is subject to future revision.
An album with twenty-two (22) photographs of the over 200 Libravets that attended the 2004 Librascope Reunion was added to the Photo Album section.

Added four (4) more vintage advertisements to the Photos - “Advertisements” Album.
1. Added a new Album titled “1995 Service Awards” (18 photos).
2. Added a new Album titled “BSY 2” (11 photos).
3. Added five (5) photos to the People Album.
4. Added four (4) photos to the Products Album.
5. Added two (2) photos to the Advertisements Album.

Also added a “Plasma Displays” literature sheet to the Products Literature link in the Librazettes+ Section.
Goodbye MobileMe! This website is no longer hosted by Apple’s aging MobileMe cloud service. After much difficulty, we have managed to move our complete Librascope Memories’ website to a new hosting service provider. A few changes were necessary, but probably no one will notice them. The elimination of MobileMe’s Gallery feature, an option we provided for viewing our Libravet videos and photo albums on an Apple TV or separately on a computer screen, was the most significant change. All references to MobileMe and its features have been deleted.

If you experience any problems with viewing this website, please let us know so they can be corrected. Note, we are continuing to use Apple’s iWeb website design program to maintain and occasionally update this website. Thus the Apple logo continues to appear at the bottom of each page.
From this website’s beginning in April 2009, Librascope Memories has been hosted without problems by Apple’s aging MobileMe subscription service. However, this will soon change, because Apple has announced that on June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shut down forever and they (Apple) will no longer be in the web hosting business. Apple has not offered their customers any alternatives, except to say “find another host”. Consequently, by the end of next month, MobileMe customers will have to find another web hosting service in order to remain online. Note, the Librascope Memories - News Blog, hosted by Google’s Blogspot, is not affected by Apple’s decision.

Shutting down the Librascope Memories website is not being considered, so we are working to move it. Moving a large (3+ GB) website such as this one is not simple though, because, in addition to the potential technical problems, there is the annual subscription cost, customer service, and vendor reliability to consider.

Fortunately, there are a few good hosting services to choose from, and this week we plan to start the selection and implementation process. If all goes according to plan, our new website will be online before the old one goes off and the address (URL) will continue to be www.librascopememories.com.

Please visit the Librascope Memories - News Blog at www.librascopememories.blogspot.com between now and June 30th for important updates and more details about what features will be changing.

On the positive side, a 4 page X-Y Plotter brochure from the early 1960’s was added to the Product Literature section, bringing the collection online up to 68. The unit was patented in 1962 by Norman J Bose and Nolan R. Kroninger. Nolan’s son Jon sent this to me. I believe the gentleman on page 3 is Norm Bose.

Finally, an interesting link to a 1955 document titled “The Simulation Council Newsletter” was added to the “Links” section. Mr. Imm’s comments are most interesting.

Dear Libravet,

Only 76 days until the 2010 Libravet Reunion, so please get your reservation (and your check) in to Georgine soon.

Since my last Librascope Memories update two months ago, we've made several significant additions.

1. First, we added a new (supplemental) web-site called Carl's Gallery, where you can quickly go to easily view all the Librascope Memories photo albums and movies, including 5 new "People", 11 new vintage "Advertisements", 2 new "Places", and 11 new "Products". You'll enjoy the old photos that Howard Applegate recently contributed. Note, these additions were also published on the Librascope Memories web-site.

2. There is now a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) page located between the "Links" and "Blog" pages. Check it out. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

3. On the Librascope +/Brochures page we added two interesting documents from the 1950's era. First is a 36 page 1956 Librascope Facilities brochure, and the other is a 20 page 1957 Employees Group Insurance Plan booklet. If your 1957 annual salary was, say, between $5,000 and $7,500 per year and you had one dependent, your monthly contribution was only $4.55. See pages 7 and 8 for more details.

4. The About page was revised to incorporate Blog #1 (How It All Began).

5. Finally, 3 News Items, 1 new Link for CATFAE, and Product Literature for 6 "new" items were added to their respective pages on Librascope Memories.

As always, your comments and suggestions are sincerely appreciated.

Enjoy!

Also, added the URL for an invitation to the 2010 Libravet Reunion to the bottom of the Welcome page.
Dear Libravet,

In my December 22 year end update e-mail, I mentioned that we were currently developing a program which would allow you to simultaneously search all 294 Librazettes, plus all the other documents on the Librascope Memories web-site (www.librascopememories.com). That capability is now operational and available on the web-site.

In short, you only need to type in a search term, such as your name or that of another Libravet, and a list of all the Librazettes and other documents containing that name will quickly appear. The name will then be highlighted when each document is opened.

To get started, go to the Librazettes+ page at: http://web.me.com/sonofsoren/Librascope_Memories/Librazettes_+.html, and follow the instructions.

The other additions that were made with this 1/30/10 update are briefly described on the Blog at: http://web.me.com/sonofsoren/Librascope_Memories/Blog/Blog.html.

If you have any questions, comments, or problems, please e-mail me.

Enjoy!

Added Librascope Search capability utilizing Evernote, a database search program which allows all the documents on the Librascope Memories web-site to be easily and quickly searched. See introduction at the top of the Librazettes + page.

Added two Librascope advertisements and a photo to the Librascope People Album.

Added some technical information to assist with the viewing of Librascope Videos.

Revised Welcome page text to include new search capability..
Removed “Hit Counter” from the bottom of the Welcome page after approximately 1,800 views since April, 2009.
Dear Libravet,

I would like to bring you up to date on the recent additions and future plans for the “Librascope Memories” web-site (www.librascopememories.com). Much progress has been made since the web-site was first published in April, 2009, and more is planned for 2010.

1) There are now 294 Librazettes on the web-site which cover the early 1940’s through the year 1999. In total, there are 2,246 Librazette pages occupying 1.4GB of web-site storage space. All six decades of Librazettes are in OCR’ed PDF format, so they can easily be read, printed, saved, and/or individually searched on your computer using Adobe Reader. Special thanks to Ray Hand who manually scanned almost all of these Librazettes, so that they could be published. We believe our collection is close to complete now, but any missing issues will be added as soon as they become available.
2) In addition to the 294 Librazettes, several photographs, advertisements, news items, brochures, and product literature have been added. There are also five videos now. Many more additions to each of these categories are planned for next year.
3) Today, a countdown timer was added to the bottom of the Welcome page which indicates the total days and hours remaining until the next Libravet Reunion in 2010. Next month, Georgine Archer will be sending out the 2010 Reunion details.
4) We are currently developing a program which allow you to simultaneously search all 294 Librazettes, plus all the other documents on the web-site. For example, by simply typing your name into a “Librazettes” search box, you’ll receive a complete listing of all the Librazettes that your name appears in. This new feature should be available on the web-site early next year.
5) Finally, please note that the Librascope Memories Blog page continues to be used to report updates to the web-site as they are published. If you have an RSS reader such as “Google Reader”, you may easily subscribe to the Blog. If you would rather be kept up to date by e-mail, please make certain we have your correct e-mail address.

Happy Holidays,
Carl Sorensen

Added the last 16 Librazettes from the 1960’s decade. All available (294) issues are now on-line!!!
Added 22 Librazettes from the 1980’s. This completes the 1980’s decade. 95% (278) of the 294 total are now on-line. Only 16 issues (5%) to go!
Added five Librazettes from November, 1978 through December, 1979. This completes the 1970’s decade. 87% (256) of the 294 total are now on-line. 38 issues (13%) to go.
Added 17 Librazettes from January, 1966 through February, 1968. 85% (251) of the 294 total are now on-line. 43 issues (15%) to go.
Added 48 Librazettes from July, 1955 through December, 1959. This completes the 1950‘s decade. 234 (80%) of the 294 total are now on-line. 60 issues (20%) to go. Note, the corrected total is now 294 issues.
Added 25 Librazettes from November 1952 through June 1955. 186 (63%) of the 293 Librazettes available are now on-line. 107 issues (623 pages) to go.

Also, added 2 photos to the People Album, 6 photos to the Places Album, and one photo to the People Album. In addition, added 8 News Items, 3 Advertisements, and one PBY-5 Librascope Instruction Manual from WWII to the Product Literature section.
Added a 1993 News Item, a 1994 Employee Benefits Summary to Brochures, and ten items to Product Literature. This includes a 1938 Librascope Instruction Manual and a new product announcement that appeared in the October, 1937 issue of Popular Mechanics.

Added 27 Librazettes to the 1940’s decade. 161 (55%) of the total (293) Librazettes presently available, are now on-line.

The remaining 132 Librazettes (725 pages) are larger than 8.5” x 11”, and are too large for our standard size flatbed scanner. An A3 or 11” x 17” scanner with OCR/PDF software is now required; although, an 8.5” x 14” (Legal size) unit would allow us to scan 34 of the remaining 132 issues, or 243 of the 725 pages . Kinko’s (FedEx) has quoted $1.00 per page, or $725 plus tax. Any suggestions, or offers to help would be appreciated.

The larger sizes may have to be scanned commercially.
